How to apply
Gaining entry and acceptance to THS begins with the application. This is a very important step so please fill the application form with thought and care. A completed application package must be submitted in order for the application to be processed.  

 

A completed application includes:

 

  • A completed application form

  • A digital photograph of the applicant

  • A copy of the applicant’s passport (ID Pages only)

  • Copies of both parent’s passports (ID Pages only)

  • Previous two years of applicant’s school reports (if applicable)

  • Copies of all specialist reports or assessments (if applicable)

  • Student reference form to be filled in and returned by a previous teacher (if applicable)

 

* Please note that indication of interest by phone or in person cannot be considered by the administration as a reservation for placements.  Completed applications must be submitted in order for an applicant to enter the queue for consideration.

 

*THS has "international school" status in Hong Kong and in keeping with EDB mandate, can only accept up to 10 per cent of its total students enrolled, students with HK SAR passport. Please see EDB guidelines for international schools here.

 

If the applicant is not currently residing in Hong Kong, please submit the following additional materials:

 

  • Independent samples (2 -3 pieces of current school work)

  • A list of two books that the applicant has recently read independently with indication of comfort level with these books

  • Name of Math program used at applicant’s current school and a sample of independently completed work

  • English translation for records as needed

 

The Principal and Vice Principal will perform an initial evaluation of the application, and may require for the student to attend a trial day at the school. As part of the application, we request all past school reports and relevant information from professionals (e.g. psycho educational or speech and language assessments). Please let us know if an assessment or report is forthcoming, and please follow up with existing organizations or schools on your own.  Missing documents will delay the process.

 
“Trial Days” and the next step

 

If a trial day has been required, it is to ensure that the child and family are familiar with the school, and it allows the teacher to do a general in-class evaluation: how a child fares within the student-teacher ratio THS offers (7:1), how a child handles class routines and transitions, how he/she learns alongside peers, and how he/she works independently. Our school does not require even performance in all academic areas and we do not require any formal admissions testing, however please note that for students to be successful at THS within the class setting, he/she must be able to demonstrate the ability to conceptually access curriculum inclusive of our Junior Great Books seminars, Oracy to Literacy activities, integrated hands-on science and social studies units.

 

Unless parents are otherwise advised, trial days are typically from 9:00 a. m. to 11:00 a. m. on a day that is mutually agreed upon by the class teacher, the administration, and the family. In order to ensure that our teachers and students are disrupted minimally, trial days are scheduled only one prospective applicant per class per week during certain months only, so please be patient with scheduling one if it is required. Prospective student-applicants should bring a snack and a water bottle, and parents should leave a mobile number with the administrative assistant, where they may be reached at any point during the trial day.

 

A meeting between the teacher, Principal and Vice Principal takes place after the trial day, and a final evaluation will be held for a decision of offer or refusal of the applicant.

 

A letter and an email will be sent to the applicant and family informing them of the school’s decision within 2-3 weeks’ time.  

 

Accepted applicants are given 7 days upon receipt of the acceptance letter to contact the school to express interest and arrange payment for placement.  Failure to respond will result in the applicant’s seat being made available to other applicants.  

 

Parents may arrange initial payment to secure a placement for their child, but if the time between initial payment and the child’s actual enrollment is beyond 30 days, the school reserves the right to contact the family and require tuition for the reserved months if another prospective student applicant for the same year level completes the process during that time and requests to begin immediately.

 

A word on our “provisional” acceptance policy


At THS, we take differentiated education very seriously, especially in the areas of literacy and numeracy. Students who are gifted/academically advanced or students who benefit from closer teacher attention thrive in our small classes because our teachers are committed to adjusting instruction and curricula to meet their students’ abilities.  

 

However, if a student is identified as having highly specialized needs that simply cannot be addressed within the class by the regular class teacher, THS may require that additional support be provided by a member of our Learning Enhancement team in any of the following areas: literacy, numeracy or social skills, according to a user-pay system.
