Celebrating Science: Annual Science Fair at The Harbour School

For three years now, The Harbour School’s high school students have proudly hosted its annual Science Fair, a cherished tradition that brings together students, families, and teachers to celebrate the wonders of science. This event showcases our young scientists' talents and powerfully reminds us how science permeates every aspect of our lives. It inspires curiosity, fosters critical thinking, and encourages students to engage with the world around them.

High school science students in Biology 2, Chemistry 2, and Physics 2 get to step out of their comfort zone and into the shoes of a passionate scientist. They take on the responsibility of their projects, from formulating hypotheses by conducting extensive background research to carrying out experiments and analyzing results. This process teaches them the value of the scientific method—a structured approach to investigation that encourages curiosity and rigorous thinking. As science teachers, we do our best to support students as they answer their questions, seek answers, and communicate their findings. 

The best part of the Science Fair is the wide variety of student projects. Science inherently involves uncertainty; students often discover unexpected results that inspire new experiments. They learn to persevere, refining their methods and conducting additional research to explain these outcomes. This process enhances their scientific understanding and promotes a spirit of inquiry and resilience.

On Science Fair day, the Black Box Theatre buzzes with excitement as students set up their displays. Shy students enthusiastically share their findings, showcasing projects that range from investigating soil acidity's effects on radish seed germination to building boats from scratch. Each display reflects the hard work and creativity of our students, while parents, teachers, and fellow students eagerly explore the innovative ideas and discoveries on display.

Moreover, the Science Fair highlights the relevance of science in our everyday lives. It serves as a reminder that scientific principles are not confined to textbooks or classrooms; they are all around us. From understanding how music affects memory to making informed decisions about lactose and gluten in the diet, science plays a crucial role in shaping our world. By engaging with these concepts, students and everyone develop a deeper appreciation for the natural phenomena that surround them.

As families and friends gather to witness the students' hard work, the room is filled with laughter, discussion, and encouragement. This year, the sight of judges in lab coats added a playful touch to the atmosphere!  Students were evaluated by their teachers the day before the fair and then faced a diverse panel of judges, challenging them to explain their science to a broader audience. The excitement is palpable as they rise to the occasion, showcasing their knowledge and passion for discovery!
