Simon Pang, Extracurricular Program Manager
Hello! I am Simon, the Extracurricular Program Manager at The Harbour School. The school year is off to a fantastic start! Our School Extension Activity (SEA) courses and Black Dolphin Sports programs are already in full swing. I wanted to use this opportunity to share the importance of extracurricular activities in your child's education. These activities—ranging from cooking and STEM to various clubs and sports—play a vital role in helping students explore interests beyond their regular academic subjects.
At The Harbour School, we offer over 20 after-school programs, including the SEA and Black Dolphin Sports, as well as more than 10 lunchtime clubs led by our dedicated teachers. We carefully select programs that align with our values, ensuring they are both enjoyable and enriching, supporting your child's overall development. Each day, students have the chance to get involved and discover activities that truly excite them.
For our primary years students, sports programs such as soccer, gymnastics, and basketball provide valuable opportunities to develop fundamental motor skills. Given the limited space in Hong Kong, these activities allow students to exercise and practice, benefiting them physically while also giving them a break from devices, screens and academics.
Engaging in various activities helps children discover and refine their passions and talents, boosting their self-awareness and confidence—key components of personal growth. For students who may not thrive in traditional academics, extracurriculars offer an alternate pathway to success, enabling them to excel in areas they love and fostering a sense of achievement and belonging. For instance, our Tech Know Wise program allows students interested in drama to participate behind the scenes, contributing to lighting design and other essential aspects of production.
Extracurricular activities are not just a break from academics; they are vital for nurturing well-rounded individuals prepared for life beyond school. Take Hong Kong Olympian Vivian Kong, who began fencing as an extracurricular activity and went on to excel both in sports and academics. Research supports the idea that such opportunities are crucial for building resilient, successful individuals.
Encouraging your child to explore diverse interests fosters a love for learning that extends beyond the classroom. This passion can evolve into lifelong hobbies or even career paths, providing them with a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Whether through sports or Lego engineering, extracurricular activities can spark creativity and innovation.
