How The Harbour School is Leveraging AI Education

In our creative AI class at The Harbour School, something remarkable is unfolding.
Our students are diving into the world of artificial intelligence—not just as a technical tool, but as a creative partner, a co-intelligence. Whether they’re making digital art, composing music, or experimenting in other creative domains, they’re discovering that working with AI is as much about the journey as the destination.

What’s especially meaningful right now is watching our students build confidence in their own thinking. Traditionally, academic work is expected to follow a neat, linear path: research, outline, draft, revise, submit. But when you’re collaborating with AI, the process is anything but straightforward. It’s iterative, sometimes messy, and often surprising. Ideas bounce around, evolve, and occasionally take off in directions no one could have predicted.
We’re encouraging students to see this non-linear, back-and-forth process as a strength, not a flaw. Just because their thought process with AI doesn’t look like a textbook example doesn’t mean it’s wrong. It’s often where the magic happens. By embracing this iterative approach, our students are learning to apply what we call “humics”—those uniquely human qualities of curiosity, intuition, and creativity—alongside the capabilities of AI.
As one student shared, “I'm just excited that we are finally in class that encourages us to use AI.” Another student expressed, “I'm excited to figure out what the future will be like for me and how I can prepare for it.”
Here are 5 key insights we’ve learned from our creative AI journey so far:
1. Embrace the Non-Linear Process (and feel ethically permitted to):
Learning with AI isn’t a straight line. It’s okay to take detours, revisit ideas, and experiment. This iterative approach fosters creativity and deeper understanding. Let those who need to know know.
2. Apply Humics:
The human qualities of curiosity, empathy, critical thinking and creativity are essential. AI is a tool, but it’s the human touch that makes the work meaningful and valuable.
3. Build Confidence Through Experimentation:
Trying new things, making mistakes, and reflecting on the process helps students grow their creative confidence. The freedom to explore in a supportive environment is what sets our international school in Hong Kong apart.
4. Collaborate Across Disciplines:
AI can enhance art, music, writing, and more. Encouraging cross-disciplinary projects broadens students’ perspectives and skills, making learning more relevant and exciting for everyone from primary school to high school.
5. Prepare for the Future:
Developing AI literacy and creative problem-solving skills equips students for a rapidly changing world. Our American curriculum and inclusive school culture ensure that every student, regardless of background or learning support needs, has the opportunity to thrive.
At The Harbour School, we pride ourselves on our small classroom sizes and commitment to experiential learning. Our students are not just learning about AI—they’re learning how to work with it, question it, and use it to express their own unique voices. This is what makes a school day at The Harbour School so dynamic and our learning environments so rich.

As we continue this journey, we’re excited to see how our students will keep redefining what it means to learn and create in an age of co-intelligence. Looking forward to seeing what other insights come from our creative AI classroom!
