Experiential learning means getting hands-on and into the thick of things. This ethos is reflected in our approach to learning and in our unique learning spaces, The Foundry and The Marine Science Center.
The Foundry is a purpose-built makerspace with both traditional workshop elements and modern features such as 3D printers.
The Marine Science Center enables students to see marine ecosystems up close and is also an active research facility where students can learn more about the scientific process.
We believe that the best way to learn about the natural world is not sitting in a classroom. We take our students out on The Black Dolphin, a 50-foot wooden ketch to explore Hong Kong and its outlying islands.
In addition to learning about nature, students develop a strong sense of camaraderie and teamwork as they complete group projects and explore the world around them.
Teachers also organise regular field trips and excursions to enable students to see and experience learning and the world beyond the walls of THS.
The Social Impact and Sustainability Program (SISP) is THS’ framework to build social responsibility and sustainability into the fabric of our program.
SISP incorporates the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into the curriculum, and encourages students, parents and staff to engage with these goals through planned and tailored initiatives for each grade from Primary to High School.
At THS, we love learning beyond the walls and borders of our school campuses and we know how important it is for students to broaden their horizons and experiences. Field trips, camps and excursions are all cherished highlights of the experience of learning at THS.
Field trips happen regularly throughout the school year, across wider Hong Kong in support of the learning that is happening at school. Museums, country parks, the Black Dolphin and historical sights are just some of the favorite locations for regular field trips.
Camps happen for our Grade 4, 5 and 6 students and are a crucial element in building community, developing resilience and independence and experiencing a whole new world of learning. Camps generally happen in the first term of the year and often focus on experiencing and enjoying the outdoors.
International excursions are an absolute favourite and take place for students in Middle School and High School, as well as for our Grade 3 community - including parents! International excursions are extended international experiences, led by faculty with students and that have links to a curricular objective or course. Typically lasting 5-7 days, though longer is possible, activities for the most part reinforce curricular objectives and provide experiences that support completion of a final project. The Grade 3 community trip to Xi’An is a THS institution that builds on a term of studying Ancient China and that allows parents to experience learning alongside their children and the teachers.
The Grove has several learning centers focused on the arts.
At the Art Studio, students have a wonderful environment in which to paint, sculpt, shape, craft, or otherwise make art, which can then be proudly displayed in the school.
The Digital Arts Center is used to teach digital and media literacy, ensuring that our Arts program keeps up with the changing times. Here students encounter new avenues for creativity, with lessons on everything from coding to videography.
The theatrical and performative arts aren’t forgotten either, as the campus houses The Black Box Theatre, a flexible 2200 sq. ft. performance space. Here students learn drama, rhetoric, dance, music, and more.
The Black Box Theatre also plays host to our 5th Grade, 6th grade and Middle School Ensembles which are a central pillar of our musical programs. Students in Middle School also have the option to join our choir while earlier in the Primary School students take part in a general music program.
We recognise and cherish the value of learning languages and all students at THS take part in our language program. This program encompasses French, Mandarin Chinese, and English as an Additional Language (EAL) with a goal of providing hands-on experiences that instill an appreciation for the respective tongue and the cultures in which it exists. Focus is placed on expanding vocabulary and encouraging conversation.
Students also take part in lessons focused on the respective cultures, experiencing the food and language associated with festivals and traditions throughout the year.
