Wellbeing

Wellbeing at The Harbour School embodies the principle of the school as a community, a place of welcome and belonging for all; a harbour.

It incorporates social-emotional learning, physical wellbeing development, community building, strong and positive relationships as well as elements such as mindfulness, gardening, and play.

Social-emotional learning in Primary School happens everywhere, all the time.  In directed lessons in the classroom, building on the expertise of talented educators, as part of our TIDE program, when playing with friends inside at snack time or out on the basketball court, during conversations around the lunch table, or when there has been an argument between friends.  Being able to recognise our own emotions, to understand how to build relationships and of course having strategies for how to overcome problems are all key elements of this program.

  • TIDE sessions happen every day in the primary school, allowing for grade and floor communities to connect, for challenges to be addressed, for successes to be celebrated, and to enjoy spending time together.  TIDE sessions are also the space for learning key skills of relationships, communication, navigating conflict and developing awareness and understanding of the world around us.
  • Movement and Wellness at THS  is so much more than PE!  As well as understanding the importance of exercise and physical health, we develop an understanding of fair play, practise cooperation, and celebrate the successes of others.  Taking turns, helping out, and having a part to play are all vital skills developed through physical wellbeing lessons.  And we get to enjoy playing sports as well!

In support of individual and community wellbeing, students from Grade 3 up have weekly World of Well-being classes with our school counselor.  These address topics such as, but not limited to, healthy relationships, conflict, puberty, general consent, adolescent sexual development, identity and image and many more.

Students and families can also access short-term, individual support from the counselor in the event of students experiencing difficulties dealing with relationships, personal concerns or developmental issues. Individual counseling is short-term in nature; school counselors do not provide long-term therapy. In general, individual counseling sessions span 4-6 weeks.  If ongoing support is still needed at that point, the student and family would be referred to an outside service.
